Comprised of six precincts running the length of the Madison Range from West Yellowstone down through Big Sky, Gallatin Gateway, Four Corners and over to the neighborhoods southwest of Bozeman, district 70 is a extremely large and diverse geographic/demographic area. Though its constituents are largely Caucasian in make-up, their per capita income and net-worth proves far less homogenous in the breadth of its parameters. The long and narrow layout of the district along State Highway 191, and the southern-most resident’s considerable distance (approx. 90 miles) from the county seat in Bozeman makes it even more challenging for those constituents living in or around Big Sky and West Yellowstone who frequently find themselves living as if in island communities.

Issues of concern for those living within House District 70:

• The abundance of gravel pits and the conflict of use that they frequently present for neighboring land owners.
• Water rights and the future disbursement of water appurtenant to those rights are of considerable concern for many residents.
• Schools, their proximity to the students attending them, and funding for their services are all questions of significant gravity within the district, as they are throughout Montana.
• The safety of Highway 191, particularly the Canyon stretch running from mile marker 71 to roughly mile marker 35, is of ongoing importance as safety measures along the entire length of the highway are implemented and addressed.
• Finally, the Gallatin Gateway neighborhood zoning plan is a subject of some contention for constituents living in and around that area and the question of how the Gateway “town core” might remediate its antiquated water and sewer infrastructure.
